Overview

The Pacific Highway in northern New South Wales has long been due an upgrade and realignment. The works were let as a series of individual contracts. ABI Group were awarded the Yelgun to Chinderah section and employed Geotechnical Systems Australia to manufacture and install the instrumentation. ABI Group personnel were trained for future installations.
The initial instrumentation was used to assess the performance of the pre-load embankments. This included the use of inclinometers either side of the embankment, piezometers and magnetic extensometers installed in drill holes below the embankment and hydrostatic profile gauges running through the drainage blanket.
Following the initial trial panels, Geotechnical Systems supplied similar instrumentation for the main pre-load embankments and extensometers for the tunnel at the northern end of the job. ABI Group personnel trained by Geotechnical Systems and backed up by Tech Support from our Melbourne office installed the later instrumentation.

Outcome

The contract was completed successfully and ABI Group is now operating the monitoring system.
The initial data from the trial panel was a valuable tool in confirming the design values and led to refinement of the drainage wick spacing for the main works.

The use of Geotechnical Systems to carry out initial installations followed by training of ABI Group staff proved to be a cost effective method of completing this large instrumentation contract.
