Overview
The Department of Defence is proposing to dispose of its former naval stores depot at Ermington. The site is to be developed for residential use as a high quality precinct yielding up to 700 dwellings and parkland. Works to progress this plan are to stabilise the underlying soft fill materials and raise the level of the site above the 1:100 year flood requirements.
The contract was for the supply, installation and maintenance of ground monitoring equipment to enable engineering analysis to determine whether the Construction Works are achieving the designed site filling and stabilisation objectives.
The instrumentation layout consisted of five individual sites each containing three double piezometer boreholes and three extensometer boreholes. These instruments were connected via trenched cable to five monitoring stations. Each station consists of a VW Logger and an Extensometer Logger housed in a steel enclosure and powered by a solar panel.
Geotechnical Systems were responsible for the instrument manufacture and supply, site supervision, control of drilling and trenching subcontractors, client and main contractor liaison and commissioning.

Outcome

The contract was completed successfully on time and on budget with the minimum of interference with the main contract. The monitoring system is now operational.
