Adjacent to the town of Thredbo the Alpine
Way has undergone a large ammount of stabilisation works. These
have been undertaken as a result of the research carried out into
the cause of the landslip that occurred there resulting in one
of the worst Australian disasters of recent times.
Since the slip Geotechnical Systems have been involved in several
other monitoring projects to assist in the research.
The
current project has been to monitor the loads on ground anchors
which have been installed underneath the Alpine Way. Geotechnical
Engineering and Rye Plant Hire installed the load cells under
contract to the NSW Dept of Public Works and Services. We acted
as a sub-contractor to Geotechnical Engineering in this instance.
The
ground anchors are located at the ground surface through an anchor
pad consisting of a steel and shotcrete waler per pair of anchors.
The anchor passes through two steel platens sandwiching a loadcell
between them. The instruments are linked into a multicore cable
and then run in conduit back to a logger mounted on a post.
The
loggers are our new VW Logger which feature a graphic user interface
and are proving very popular since their launch.
